Whalley Road
Ground Floor Rear Extension, Dormer Extension
Completed 2024

We reimagined and extended the ground floor layout to create a series of living spaces more suited to family life with a strong connection to the garden. The contemporary, light-filled extension steps down from the existing floor level, distinguishing the old from the new while remaining sympathetic to the original features of this period property nestled within a Conservation Area.
By opening up the wall to the central utility room we unlocked a new space for the kitchen. The new spaces are thoughtfully defined, with framed openings in the original external wall offering enticing glimpses between old and new. A large picture window at the end of the extension serves as a stunning focal point and brings the outside in.

The materials were carefully considered to echo the tones and craftsmanship of the original property. A bespoke birch ply shading device sits below the rooflight running the length of the extension towards the garden. Light filters through the timber fins, casting soft patterns on the exposed brickwork below. The angled window seat not only offers serene garden views but also preserves the sightline from the original bay window, enhancing the sense of continuity throughout the spaces.
The dormer extension extends out over the outrigger, stepping down in height to respect the original roofline. The thoughtful design creates a new master bedroom suite, complete with dedicated office space and an ensuite. Strategically placed windows and rooflights enhance the layout, framing picturesque views and flooding the interiors with natural light.
"It's been easy working with him and we feel he 'gets' us, our interests and what we're looking for... He has great vision and an eye for detail, creating some really beautiful features in the drawings we have gone with."
